Hertz Rental Car Review

Hertz Rental Car is one of the world’s largest car rental companies. Including its subsidiaries, the firm operates in 9,700 locations across 150 countries and has been in existence for a century, originally renting out Ford Model T automobiles from its first office in Chicago.  The Hertz rewards program, Hertz Gold Plus, rewards its users for every dollar spent on car rentals and optional extras. It also offers discounts of up to 15% on bookings.  Customers can exchange points for free car rentals and have the added feature of bypassing the line at select pickup and drop off locations.

Hertz Rental Car Pros

Hertz has a large inventory of vehicles from compact economy cars to luxury vehicles.  It has more than 3,700 rental offices in the United States alone so there are always options for pick up locations.  Hertz offers a pickup service for passengers traveling to non-airport locations and although the company is quite expensive for daily rentals, Hertz does offer discounts for longer term rentals. The company’s loyalty program provides large reductions on future rentals and allows regular users to collect points and use these for free vehicle rental.  Drivers 50 and older receive discounts of up to 20% on car rental prices and the company also sells used rental cars to members and non-members at good prices.

Hertz Rental Car Cons

Hertz is expensive. In fact, they are the most expensive car rental service in most instances.  Yes, there are discounts for long-term bookings, but these are discounts on already high prices.  Hertz also has a very high fee for additional drivers – $14 per day.  Depending on the location and car, Hertz charges between $15 and $30 for younger drivers who are excluded from driving luxury and high powered cars.  Sometimes pre-booked cars are unavailable and extra charges on credit cards and long waits at pick up locations can deter renters.

Hertz Rental Car Bottom Line

Hertz is available at many locations worldwide and has one of the best car rental customer loyalty programs.  However, the company is one of the most expensive in the market, particularly for short-term rentals.  Hertz does offer a superior vehicle inventory so the company may still be a good choice for customers who have particular vehicle requirements in locations where there are few competitors.

How Hertz Rental Car Works

Website users have the option of signing up for membership or using the site as a guest.  To reserve a car, enter the location and dates for which you require a vehicle, click on search and the full list of available cars will be displayed on screen with the prices for prepaid and pay later options.  When you have selected the vehicle you desire, click on continue and you’ll see a variety of extra services such as GPS, Child seats and additional insurance.  Select your add-ons, enter your payment information and your reservation will be confirmed onscreen and through email.

Variety And Availability With Hertz Rental Car

With more than 9,700 locations all over the world, Hertz Rental Car excels when it comes to availability. There are especially prevalent at airports, which makes them particularly convenient if you have landed in a new city and need a car rental. Furthermore, they have a large variety of cars available, including compacts, sedan, SUVs, and luxury vehicles. Hertz also offers a “Green Collection” line of cars, which are vehicles that have a fuel-efficiency rating of at least 28 miles per gallon-highway so that you can save on gas. However, because they are such a popular company certain locations may run out of your desired vehicle quickly, so be sure to book early.

Hertz Rental Car Rewards Program

Another feature that earns Hertz Rental Car top marks is its rewards program. You earn one point for every dollar you spend and free weekend day rentals start at just 550 points, making the Hertz rewards program one of the more generous ones in the industry. You also earn points on add-ons and you can even transfer your points to your spouse or domestic partner.

Pricing With Hertz Rental Car

One drawback of Hertz is that its prices do tend to be a bit higher than average. In many cases, you will find that you can find the exact same car from another car rental agency for a much lower price. There may also be additional fees that could further drive up the price and these fees also tend to be on the high side. For example, to add an additional driver costs $14, which is higher than most other car rental companies.

Hertz Rental Car Customer Service

Many Hertz Rental Car locations are franchises, which means customer service can vary widely from one Hertz location to the next. In some instances, you might encounter pushy front counter staff, especially when it comes to purchasing the car rental’s insurance coverage. Remember that in many cases your credit card or existing car insurance will cover you for your car rental. Worse, if you accept the car rental agency’s insurance then you may inadvertently automatically cancel the insurance you already had with your credit card. Double-check beforehand to make sure you are adequately covered.
